Motivated Lighting

I really like the idea of using motivated lighting. The trick to making it work though is to use that source (the lamp) as the source from which comes all the light. Now, that doesn't mean that you only use the light from the lamp but you have to add more light as though it's coming from the lamp so that we can see the actor. Right now you're only using the lamp's light and it's just not enough. You have to bring up the exposure. Good job on the graphics though...lots of fun there.

You made some artistic decisions that certainly had some style but as a viewer I had a hard time following your story. It was also hard to see your actors because to was so dark. Roger Deakins does have lots of light and darkness in his films but you have to use more light while keeping the darks dark. I did enjoy the effort you put into the graphics. They're a nice touch.

Story is Still Important

This challenges is most certainly a cinematography challenge so lighting is the focus but I had a really hard time following the story. It was a little too cerebral to follow where you were going which is why I always say that story is one of the most important parts of your film. If your story is hard to follow then everything else suffers. I liked the idea of using a lamp as your source light and shooting at night but you really needed to add to that light so that we could see your actors.

I don't think I follow the film with the description, but it looks like it took a lot of time to make. I can appreciate the dedication and energy that went into creating this universe.

Lantern Lit

Although the story behind this project is compelling and artful, the challenge was to light the project like Roger Deakins. The Lantern was a good practical light to use in the scene but should have been augmented with some additional lighting so the filmmaker could expose the camera properly. As it was, it was severely underexposed and you could hardly see the image. The performance, which was good, wasn't clear enough to see and therefore was lost. It was a great concept that almost was.
