ROGUE ARROW

In this homage to Roger Deakins, cinematographer of movies such as Blade Runner 2049, cinematographer Leila Saidane emulates his style through silhouette, prime lenses, and focusing on color. This film follows Sami, who has a creative mind and uses it to produce characters. He creates comics with these characters, full of adventure and wonder. Sami spends as much time as he can imagining new adventures for his characters, his favorite place being under his covers after bedtime. His latest creation, Rogue Arrow, is a black belt martial artist trained in a variety of weapons. Rogue wakes up in an unfamiliar place. When Rogue is created, he appears in Sami's reality– but Sami can't see him. Rogue realizes his existence is attached to Sami's consciousness; and he would like to exist. He follows Sami through his daily tasks until he’s met with a challenge- Sami’s sleepiness. Can Rogue Arrow fight for his existence, or will Sami succumb to his tiredness?

I like the comic idea

I think you had a really great idea to make this kids drawing come to life. I can see the similarities to Deakins in your style of filming and use of colors. I like that you made a bold choice to use red light.

Creative Concept

You have a great creative concept. You just need to flesh it out further. What tools can you use to do that?
-Further development of the script so that the story gains depth.
-Nice use of rack focus to guide your audience where you want them to look.
-How can you better place your camera? At times it was hard to see what he was drawing. Moving around just a little would help to reveal better the story.
-Really think about your composition. You had some but do even more. Keep working at it.

A Great Concept

I really liked this concept. These types of projects are really hard to pull off and require a great deal of visual preparation to pick up the nuance and subtle visual cues. This particular challenge was all about lighting a scene like Roger Deakins and composing shots in unique ways that help tell the story. This is no easy task. I would like to have seen a bit more focus on the lighting by this team. Still, I loved this story and I hope you guys revisit this and make it even better.

Fun Story But A bit Confusing

This would have been a difficult film to make, especially in the short time frame that these teams had. I think the concept behind it is very interesting but without the needed time, almost impossible to do it well. There were a few shots that had some nice lighting but overall I'm willing to bet that this team was having to move so quickly to capture their story that they didn't have time to light properly. I'd love to see this team go back and design this project from the ground up.

Very Creative

The creativity of this team is awesome but I felt that it far outweighed their technical lighting abilities. This film deserved to have taken a week just to shoot it, let alone the time to visually prep it and develop the script properly. I feel like this filmmaking team should definitely keep making movies together... they're showing signs of greatness.
